A first look at El Paso’s primary voters

Throughout the early voting period, El Paso Matters is providing updates on who is voting in the March 3 Democratic and Republican primaries. El Paso County Elections Administrator Lisa Wise is predicting a possible record primary turnout.

Here’s a look at who is registered to vote in El Paso County for the primary:

• 470,416 people are registered to vote in the primary, up from 427,850 at the time of the last presidential election on Nov. 8, 2016.
• 52 percent of registered voters are women.
• 14.1 percent of voters are 18-25 years old; 18.8 percent are 65 or older. The median age of registered voters is about 44.4 years, slightly older than the 2016 registered voters.
• Among currently registered voters, 52,435 cast ballots in the 2016 Democratic primary and 26,544 voted in the Republican primary.
• 91,132 of all current registered voters registered after the last presidential election in 2016; 70 percent of them are under age 40.
• Of the 379,000 voters who were registered as of the 2016 presidential election, 54 percent of them cast ballots in that year’s general election.
